The scientific name for excessive thirst, causing excessive water consumption, is Polydipsia.  The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) define polydipsia as ‘water intake that is twice maintenance requirements’ – dogs consuming more than 100ml/kg bodyweight per day is considered excessive.
